Legacy Systems

Interfacing to or replacing a legacy system is a special type of project. Often, the people who developed the system are gone, and documentation is sketchy, incorrect, or nonexistent. In nearly all cases, only the front-end equipment is replaced with a cheaper, off-the-shelf, PC-based solution. The controlling or central system, usually a mainframe, is too complex or expensive to be replaced.

Legacy projects are largely trial and error in nature and often require reverse engineering to determine the actual interface.

It is essential to have communication access to the central system and a protocol analyzer to examine and verify the protocol.
