Bridges, Tunnels, Switches, Gateways, Application Servers
The PXS with the LayGO® toolkit can be used to develop bridges, tunnels, switches, gateways, and other communication services. Definitions for bridge, tunnel, switch, and gateway are often differently interpreted, and their functions may overlap. Bridges operate at layer two or Link Layer and are normally point-to-point connections. A tunnel is a transport path established by one network, and used as a point-to-point connection by another network. A switch, operating on layer two or three, is a node on a network that forwards data arriving on one connection to another connection using the same protocol. A gateway is a node on a network that forwards data arriving on one connection to another connection, exchanging the protocol. This section shows example applications of the PXS in these roles. |
